The experience of most new collectors of photography is the same: They are greatly attracted by what they see offered, but lack the confidence necessary to start collecting. This is because novice collectors need information MORE than they need photographs!
People do not want to make costly, inhibiting, mistakes and there is no reason why they should have to. Because we feel that knowledge breeds confidence PHOTOCOLLECT offers a COLLECTOR'S SEMINAR. The seminar is divided into three sessions, each approximately three hours in length.
SESSION II - CONNOISSEURSHIP How to recognize different photographic processes (e.g. salt prints, albumen prints, platinum prints, gravures), how to date photographs by eye, how to identify vintage from later prints, information on limited editions, what questions to ask before you buy, the law and how it protects buyers.
SESSION III - THE PHOTOGRAPHIC MARKETPLACE Where does one go to find photographs? An orientation to sources both of information (Historical texts, collector's guides, old catalogues, museums) and for photographs (galleries, dealers, auction houses, etc.)
All COLLECTOR'S SEMINAR sessions will be held at PHOTOCOLLECT 22 E. 72nd Street, New York, NY 10021, Tel: (212) 327-2211. The seminar will use a hands-on approach to the material (i.e. all sessions will use original photographs and NOT slides as examples).
Tuition for the three-session COLLECTOR'S SEMINAR is $100 payable at the first session. Although we will hold more than one seminar, each seminar will be limited to ten participants. If you are interested in perhaps attending one of our COLLECTOR'S SEMINARS please fill out the form below and press send:
Please Note: Submitting this form does NOT commit you to taking the seminar. It merely will aid us in determining approximately how many seminars to offer and on which nights. When we have scheduled the seminars we will contact you to offer a choice of dates. We hope to be of service, and thank you for your attention.
I am interested in knowing when you are offering your COLLECTOR'S SEMINARS:
PHOTOCOLLECT is of course a gallery handling the finest 19th and 20th century photographs with a full season of exhibitions, but our activities extend so far beyond that, that we think of ourselves more as a photography collector's service than just another gallery. For the last six years we have been involved in the following service areas for the seasoned as well as the novice collector:
COLLECTOR'S SEMINARS
Mostly for novice collectors, this is an orientation to photography's history, the marketplace, sources of information, and an introduction to process recognition and dating of photographs.
CONSERVATION SERVICE
For all collectors whose photographs need special care or repair. We also guide our clients in proper preservation techniques.
APPRAISALS OF COLLECTIONS
For both tax and insurance purposes, or for your own information
SALES AGENT
For our clients who wish to sell their photographs, we act as agents or brokers for the sale. If we have an interest in the work we will buy it outright.
AUCTION CONSULTANT
Periodically our clients ask us to preview works for them at auction. We appraise the lots under consideration and advise them accordingly.
MATTING AND COMPLETE FRAMING SERVICES
We have a complete line of metal and wood frames. We also mat photographs using archival materials and methods throughout.
Let me just say in conclusion, that looking at photographs at PHOTOCOLLECT is always a pleasant experience. We feel that pleasure is what collecting is all about and the entire staff will give you patient, knowledgeable, courteous assistance. We are a gallery where you can relax, feel at home and take your time. Our regular hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 1-5 pm. If those times are inconvenient, call us for an appointment. I trust we can be of service to you soon.
